Boy oh boy. It's been almost five years since I watched Half-Life VR but the AI is Self Aware for the first time, back in December of 2020. Here we are now, October of 2025, and the sequel is coming out somehow, someway before the year is over. I've been wanting to make this page for a long while now, and I've just finished watching the whole series through, so there's no time like the present, right? Right. So, where do we begin?
I'm going to assume you've watched the series before reading this page. Unless you haven't, in which case, prepare for this to make absolutely no sense!
Trying to be professional about this is getting me nowhere. Let's talk about my favorite parts of the whole thing!
First and foremost are the people who made it. I didn't know who they were when I first watched the series, but in the years since I've become a big fan of theirs, particularly Holly, Wayne, and Scorpy. The series wouldn't be what it is if these people weren't who they are, which is kind of a nothing sentence but it's true. For the most part, these people have been friends for just about as long as I've been alive. It boggles my lonely little mind to think about!
The second thing, and what I think is one of the biggest draws to the series, is the characters. It's astounding what can be done with an NPC model, a very good impression (or just your regular voice, depending), and a whole lot of improv. We've got an incredibly whimsical 37-year-old man whose last name is Coolatta (as in the Dunkin' Donuts drink), a very self-confident scientist who was born in a tube and is scared of heights, this jovial old underground boxer with an absurd amount of cybernetics and three-hundred clones, and a strange alien entity who's just as lost as anyone else and wants a free month of PlayStation+.
The comedy is another thing I absolutely love. It's on some Looney Tunes shit most of the time. Some of my favorite gags, in no particular order:
- Benrey calmly approaching a dying security guard, saying hello, and shooting him point-blank (and missing)
- Benrey trying to flag down an attacking helicopter with his passport while everybody else shoots it
- Benrey trying to open a door using a vacuum
- "Fine work, Dr. Pussy!"
- Wikipedia Hour
Most of the time, this series makes no goddamn sense. But it's very, very fun to pretend it does.
