iladalf my shining star (april 29, 2025)

oh boy, we're about a third of the way through the year! lord have mercy

most of April has been pretty boring. like last month, i haven't been up to very much, but that doesn't mean i've been up to nothing. i've finally gotten myself a library card, for one thing; it's part of my scheme to get back into writing properly. it's a simple scheme, with a mere two parts to it:

  1. read more
  2. write badly

it's simple, but hopefully effective in practice. my biggest obstacle when it comes to writing is my own standards, so if i make a point not to write something good, just write something, even if it's bad on purpose, i can build up my skill and confidence enough to properly tackle the projects i'm more emotionally invested in.

admittedly, so far success has been limited. when i was in school, i was much better at writing because i would read more and just write whatever when i was bored in class. without that environment and that boredom, it's harder to just sit still and focus.

something else that's happened is i've gotten a renewed interest in Ramshackle since the opening theme released earlier this month, so i subscribed to Zi Chen's Patreon to see all the cool behind the scenes drawings and storyboards and whatnot. seeing all the awesome drawings dating back to 2017, it got me in a drawing mood myself. another thing that's been on my mind is The Owl House, which got me thinking about fantasy settings, and those two things combined made me think about Brittlebrook.

Brittlebrook is one of my older creative projects, going back about three years now. while Lorecastle is about building off of standard tropes and staples of D&D/Tolkien-inspired fantasy, Brittlebrook is whole hog homebrew. back in December i started refreshing the concept some, and now i adore it more than ever. back when i was first figuring it out, the intended main character was this old wolf man named Tevius Dusklance (who's since been renamed Caius Stormclaw), but a little bit after that i created Iladalf Wolfvalor and got way too attached to her, so she's the main character now. i couldn't help myself, she was just too doggone cute.

there's not too much to show for my work on Brittlebrook this month, since i've mostly been adjusting the characters and rethinking the plot some, but i wanted to talk about it anyway. have you seen Iladalf Wolfvalor?

now you have.

i've also been thinking about resorting my old ramble pages some. i'd like to get them ready for public viewing again, maybe rewrite them a bit, and i'd like to make some new ones too. making some pages for my original stories and characters would also be cool, but i can only focus on so much at a time. one of these things will be happening in the upcoming month. i'll figure it out.
